Founder, Joe Homan (also Founder of Boys Town Society in India)
started a single project in 1965 for destitute boys, just south of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, South India.
Borrowing a piece of wasteland, he
invited six homeless boys to help him clear the scrub and make mud
bricks. They built a mud wall cottage to live in and five poultry
sheds. After six months this had developed
into a poultry farm producing 700 eggs a day. A year later, 32 acres
of semi-desert land was bought and the first
Boys Town was built at Tirumangalam.
From humble beginnings, Boys Town
Society has grown over the last 40 years and today there are 8
residential homes for boys aged 11-18 in South India, each housing
85 youngsters, as well as 5 similar projects for girls and younger
children.
Joe Homan is currently President of
both Boys Town Society and The Joe Homan Charity.
Just as the projects have developed,
the Charity too has changed over the years, however its home remains
in the Cathedral City of Peterborough.
The Peterborough office is the hub of
our activities, and is in contact with our supporters both in the UK
and all over the world, some as far away as Japan and Western
Canada, as well as many countries within Europe. In 2002 we were pleased to welcome
local author Christopher Awdry as our Patron.
Christopher and his father, the Rev.
W.V. Awdry, between them have written many books comprising “The
Railway Series” featuring Thomas the Tank Engine, the Fat
Controller, and many other favourite characters.
Christopher lives near to
Peterborough and is actively involved in many groups. |
