We are funding a
single Boys Town in North East
Thailand, located in Isaan, the poorest region of the Kingdom.
Farming is the livelihood of virtually all those in the region,
despite appallingly infertile soil and long periods of drought.
Seasonally millions migrate to the cities seeking employment. The
boys all come from a background of extreme poverty, some orphans,
some from broken homes.
The Boys Town was
established in 1989 and is home for some 60 school going youngsters,
whilst others have progressed through secondary education are
supported at college or university. The project is managed by
Members of the Rotary Club of Khon Kaen and directed by a small
dedicated staff. The town is run on the same lines as a
Boys Town in India, with education the
priority but living a full life with discipline and activity.
Currently there is an emphasis on learning English and computer
skills.
The boys come because
it is their one chance of going to school. In Thailand primary
education is compulsory and free, secondary education has to be paid
for and is beyond the reach of many families. Without Boys Town, the
boys would have little or no chance of advancement in their lives.
Without Boys Town it would be seasonal farming like their fathers
and continuing to live in poverty. With Boys Town the cycle of
poverty can be broken.
Boys Town is
desperately in need of your help. It currently costs about £300 a
year to keep a youngster at the project.
Sponsorship of the boys is vital in helping to pay these costs.
Sponsorship costs just £15.00 a month (£180 a year), the balance of
which is made up from general donations. All sponsors
receive detail and case study for their child and kept informed on
the progress through periodic reports and photographs.
If you wanted to
visit your sponsor child, you would be warmly greeted at the Boys
Town, it is an unforgettable experience. The Boys Town is in an area
of Thailand rarely visited by tourists so if you have a desire to
see the ‘real Thailand’ this is it.
Regular visits to the
Boys Town by volunteers, JHC Trustees and staff ensures we are fully
involved in the management of the project. |
